چکیده

Solid-state shear pulverization (SSSP) is a unique processing technique for mechanochemical modification of polymers, compatibilization of polymer blends, and exfoliation and dispersion of fillers in polymer nanocomposites. A systematic parametric study of the SSSP technique is conducted to elucidate the detailed mechanism of the process and establish the basis for a range of current and future operation scenarios. Using neat, single component polypropylene (PP) as the model material, we varied machine type, screw design, and feed rate to achieve a range of shear and compression applied to the material, which can be quantified through specific energy input (Ep). As a universal processing variable, Ep reflects the level of chain scission occurring in the material, which correlates well to the extent of the physical property changes of the processed PP. Additionally, we compared the operating cost estimates of SSSP and conventional twin screw extrusion to determine the practical viability of SSSP. POLYM. ENG. Cellulose nanocrystal/polyolefin biocomposites prepared by solid-state shear pulverization: Superior dispersion leading to synergistic property enhancements

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), a class of renewable bionanomaterials with excellent mechanical properties, have gained major interest as filler for polymers. However, challenges associated with effective CNC dispersion have hindered the production of composites with desired property enhancements. Here, composites of polypropylene (PP) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) with 5e10 wt% unmodified...

Green composites of polypropylene and eggshell: Effective biofiller size reduction and dispersion by single-step processing with solid-state shear pulverization

Eggshell (ES), a waste byproduct from food processing and hatcheries, contains 95% calcium carbonate (CC), making it a potentially attractive, less expensive substitute for commercial CC. Past work used complex grinding–sieving and/or chemical modification steps to aid in dispersing ES in polymers such as polypropylene (PP). Both steps add to the cost and reduce the green aspect of the composit...

Dispersion and Property Enhancements in Polyolefin/Soy Flour Biocomposites Prepared via Melt Extrusion Followed by Solid-State Shear Pulverization

Biocomposites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and polypropylene (PP) with 5–40wt% soy flour (SF) are produced by two-step single-screw extrusion (SSE) followed by solid-state shear pulverization (SSSP). The SSE-SSSP approach overcomes limitations with melt mixing, e.g poor SF dispersion and degradation, and limitations with single-step SSSP. Microscopy shows that SF is well dispersed in SSE-...

Novel, Synergistic Composites of Polypropylene and Rice Husk Ash: Sustainable Resource Hybrids Prepared by Solid-State Shear Pulverization

Rice husk ash (RHA) is an agrowaste byproduct resulting from the incineration of rice husks for power production; white RHA is 90 wt% or more silica, which makes it a potentially sustainable and inexpensive substitute for commercial (less “green”) silica filler. Past research on polypropylene (PP)-RHA hybrids made by melt processing has yielded modest increments in Young’s modulus, reduced yiel...

Dynamic Response of an Axially Moving Viscoelastic Timoshenko Beam

In this paper, the dynamic response of an axially moving viscoelastic beam with simple supports is calculated analytically based on Timoshenko theory. The beam material property is separated to shear and bulk effects. It is assumed that the beam is incompressible in bulk and viscoelastic in shear, which obeys the standard linear model with the material time derivative. The axial speed is charac...
